UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL
the astronaut who uses advanced technology to capturean arial view of the planet earth,
the elderly relative who steps back from a child
she hasn't seen in two years
and exclaims "let me get a look at you!",
the carpenter who takes a day off
and leisurely drives by the house he's building,
pulling into the driveway of your mortgaged home
after a ten day cruise in the pacific....
what's the common thread?
using distance to gain another perspective.
what's the point?
to see what is,
to see what is ours
from a different angle.
and that, quite often,
reminds us to be grateful.
at 62 years old,
with distance from my childhood,
i can now see a more complete picture of what happened.
who, what, when, where and why:
as though the details of a comfortably familiar re-run
have taken on a life of their own.
the absence of fear and shame
has allowed more room for
compassion, understanding and acceptance.
my gratitude is unparalleled,
my joy unspeakable.
and as i continue to explore the wonders
of a universe that was intended to sustain me,
as i discover new ways to grow out as well as up,
look and listen with me
because this little light of mine?
i'm gonna let it shine.
